Bulldogs Earn First Conference Win with Road Victory at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Samford women's basketball picked up its first Southern Conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Western Carolina 73–62 at the Liston B. Ramsey Center. The victory also marked the first conference win for head coach Matt Wise.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 8-11 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Western Carolina fell to 3-13 overall with the loss and 0-2 in conference play.

The Bulldogs put together a balanced offensive effort and strong defensive pressure to pull away in the second half, outscoring the Catamounts 19-11 in the third quarter and holding control down the stretch.

Kaylee Yarbrough continued her standout play, leading Samford in scoring for the ninth straight game with a team-high 23 points. The freshman was aggressive throughout, attacking the paint and knocking down key free throws late to seal the win.

Francie Morris followed Yarbrough with 13 points off the bench, providing a spark with efficient shooting and timely baskets. Briana Rivera added nine points and was a defensive force, recording five steals to help fuel Samford's transition offense.

The Bulldogs received a clutch moment in the fourth quarter from Alyssa Tarpley, who knocked down a critical three-pointer to halt Western Carolina's momentum and extend Samford's lead. Tarpley finished with six points, all coming from beyond the arc, including the decisive shot that helped secure the road victory.

Samford finished with 36 bench points and forced 20 Catamount turnovers, turning defensive pressure into offensive opportunities throughout the afternoon.

The Bulldogs will continue Southern Conference play on the road next week, traveling to Mercer for a match up on January 17 at 1 p.m.
