Samford Baseball Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader With Belmont

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team opened the 2026 season by splitting a doubleheader with Belmont Friday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
Samford won game one, 7-4, but the Bulldogs fell in game two by a score of 14-4 in seven innings.
 
In game one for Samford, Luke Boykin went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Trey Higgins went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Jeffrey Ince, Cade Carr and Gud Gandy also had two hits apiece for Samford in the first game. Ryan Vermillion (1-0) earned the win on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings in relief, giving up no runs on just one hit.
 
After falling behind, 1-0, Samford took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Carr drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Boykin hit a two-run homer to give Samford a 3-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Gandy tripled to drive in Higgins to push the lead to 4-1.
 
After Belmont cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the fifth inning, Samford added a run in the seventh inning when Boykin singled to drive in Ince for a 5-3 lead. In the eighth inning, Higgins hit a two-run home run to make the final score 7-3.
 
In the second game for Samford, Boykin homered again, and Charlie Bozeman hit his first career home run. Michael Fredette (0-1) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
 
Belmont broke the game open with eight runs in the second inning. Samford plated a run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 8-1, but the Bruins added a run in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to push the lead to 10-1.
 
Samford came back with two runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 10-3. Belmont, however, plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning and Samford added one final run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 14-4.
 
The teams will conclude the series with a single game Saturday. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
