ATHENS, Ga. – The Samford University baseball team dropped an 11-1 decision in seven innings in game one of its series at No. 9 Georgia Friday afternoon at Foley Field.
With the loss, Samford fell to 2-3 on the young season. Georgia improved to 4-1 with the win.
"Georgia has a great team," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Our guys battled and swung it really well early. Their guy adjusted and we didn't match it well with our approach. This park and their lineup is designed to hit the ball over the fence. They are going to get some we just need those to be solo shots as much as possible."
In the loss for Samford,
Luke Boykin, who started his collegiate career on the Georgia team, homered, going 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Cade Carr and
Parker McDonald also had one hit each for Samford.
Mason Blasche (0-1) pitched 3.1 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits to take his first loss as a Samford pitcher after posting a 10-0 record as a freshman in 2025.
Drew Druckenmiller,
Andrew Arnold and
Trey Sanders also saw time on the mound for Samford.
"Mase didn't have his absolute best stuff but he stayed on the attack and corrected it early," David said. "We knew what a test this was coming in. Our guys will be ready to go tomorrow."
Georgia was led at the plate by Henry Allen, Ryan Lujo and Kolby Branch each with a home run in the win. Joey Vokcko (2-0) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out eight batters to earn the win.
In the bottom of the first inning, Allen hit a three-run home run to put Georgia on top, 3-0. In the top of the second inning, Boykin homered to center field to cut the Georgia lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lujo hit a solo home run and Branch hit a two-run homer to push the lead to 6-1.
