Samford Baseball Drops Game Two At No. 9 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – Jake Souders and Luke Boykin both delivered homers, but it was not enough as the Samford baseball team dropped a 12-4 decision at ninth-ranked Georgia in the second game of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Foley Field.

With the loss, Samford fell to 2-4 on the season. Georgia improved its record to 5-1 with the victory.

"Another rough first inning but proud of our guys battle after the second inning," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Fredette was a different pitcher after the three-run shot in the first. The guys came in and attacked the zone after that. We did a better job with adjustments as the game went on today, thought the at bats improved. Souders and Boykin are seeing it incredibly well at the plate. Need a few guys to join them. The challenge is real. They are a great team. Marble will throw well tomorrow and I like our guys in relief. We will be ready to play."

For Samford, Boykin led the offense by tying his season high with three RBI, delivering a three-run home run in the fifth inning—his second homer in as many days against SEC competition. Souders notched his first home run of the season in a two-hit, two-stolen base effort, while Trey Higgins added a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Samford starter Michael Fredette (0-2) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up six runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.

Georgia starter Matt Scott (1-0) earned the win, striking out nine over four innings and allowing just one hit.

Georgia jumped out quickly in the bottom of the first, using a sacrifice fly and a three-run homer from Henry Allen to take a 4-0 lead. The home Bulldogs added another run in the second on a solo shot from Kolby Branch, extending the margin to 5-0.

Samford got on the board in the third inning when Souders launched his first home run of the season to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-1. However, Georgia responded in the home half, as Michael O'Shaughnessy connected for a three-run home run to make it 8-1.

The long ball continued to hurt Samford in the fourth, with a two-run homer from Daniel Jackson pushing Georgia's advantage to 10-1. In the top of the fifth, Samford put together its best offensive stretch of the game as Boykin blasted a three-run shot to center, scoring Cade Carr and Gus Gandy, bringing the score to 10-4.

Georgia added late insurance in the eighth on Tre Phelps' two-run home run, capping a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate and sealing the 12-4 final.

The teams will conclude the series with a game on Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT). The game can be seen live on SECN+ and live stats will also be available. For links to follow Samford baseball this season, click on the following link: 2026 SCHEDULE.
