BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team evened its series with Bowling Green with a 7-4 win Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improved its record to 4-6 on the young season. Bowling Green fell to 2-7 with the loss.
Samford was led in the win by
Jeffrey Ince, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Jake Souders went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while
Jackson Harris went 2-for-2 with a double.
Noah Berry (1-0) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up no runs on just one hit to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
Zak Spurrier tossed the final 2.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits to pick up his first save of the season.
For Bowling Green, Vinny Salvione went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Zack Horky homered in a 1-for-4 performance. Carrson Sova (0-1) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound for the Falcons.
After Bowling Green took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Samford's
Luke Boykin singled to center field to drive in Ince to cut the lead to 2-1. Bowling Green added a run in the top of the second inning to push the lead to 3-1, but in the bottom of the inning, Souders singled to right field to drive in Harris to make the score 3-2.
Samford took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Gus Gandy doubled to drive in
Parker McDonald for the inning's first run. Harris then scored on a wild pitch to give Samford a 4-3 lead. Ince then singled to drive in Gandy for a 5-3 Bulldog advantage.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to push their lead to 7-3. Souders singled up the middle to drive in Harris for the first run of the inning.
Cade Carr then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Ince for Samford's final run of the game. Bowling Green added one final run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 7-4.
