Offensive Outburst Propels Samford To 11-2 Win Over Bowling Green

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team scored 11 runs on 16 hits, including four home runs, on its way to an impressive 11-2 win over Bowling Green in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
The victory gave Samford the series win over the Falcons, and it improved the Bulldogs' season record to 5-6. Bowling Green fell to 2-8 with the loss.
 
Samford shortstop Gus Gandy went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI to lead the Bulldogs at the plate. Luke Boykin went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Jake Souders and Cade Carr had three hits each for Samford. Eddie Marshall also homered for Samford, going 1-for-4 with two RBI.
 
Samford starting pitcher Joseph Lee pitched 4.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out five batters. Reliever Trey Sanders (1-0) earned the win, tossing 1.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits. John Malone, Michael Fredette and Palmer O'Beirne also saw time on the mound for Samford.
 
For Bowling Green, Brady Birchmeier homered, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Vinny Salvione also drove in a run for the Falcons. Bowling Green pitcher Andrew Heffernan (0-2) pitched 3.1 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits to take the loss on the mound for the Falcons.
 
Samford scored early when Carr doubled to drive in Souders in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 Samford lead. In the third inning, Gandy homered to left field and Trey Higgins hit a two-run double to make the score 4-0.
 
After Bowling Green plated a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-1, Samford answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to push the lead to 8-1. Gandy hit his second solo home run of the game, Souders scored on a wild pitch and Boykin hit a two-run home run for a seven-run Samford lead.
 
Bowling Green added a run in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 8-2, but Jeffrey Ince singled to drive in Jackson Harris in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 9-2. In the sixth inning, Marshall hit a two-run home run to make the final score 11-2.
