BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford Baseball program has completed a new turfed construction project, which covers all the foul territory, home plate area and both base lines. The stadium changes are in addition to the recently completed upgrade of the locker room that included all new lockers, projector and screen for meetings, and all new appliances / cabinets for the food area.
Samford head coach Tony David says these facility changes were much needed and welcomed additions to the program.
"Both of these projects are massive for our current players and the program moving forward," David said. "The field area had become a necessity to address some issues we had near the plate. Our foul territory is massive so it was a huge project that needed to include the plate and baselines. It looks incredible. The locker room has been in need for some time as well. We had some people step forward for us to help make it happen and is another enormous positive change."
In addition to cosmetically changing things in a positive way the new turf area becomes much more functional area for practice use.
"We will be able to use the massive foul area in a variety of ways defensively, base running and hitting drills to fully utilize our surface space at the field without the wear and tear you get on the actual playing surface," David said. "Multiple places here locally stepped up to help us continue to get the work in we needed including scrimmaging the last couple of weeks. We are all excited to be back at Joe Lee full time now as we get ready for the quickly approaching season."
Samford will open the 2026 season on Friday, Feb. 13, when the Bulldogs play host to Belmont. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
