BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team shut out Presbyterian, 5-0, in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improved to 12-14 on the season. Presbyterian fell to 5-24 with the loss.
For Samford in the win,
Parker McDonald went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
Eddie Marshall went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.
Cade Carr and
Pierce Dutton also had two hits each.
Samford starting pitcher
Noah Berry (2-1) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up no runs on two hits and striking out four batters to earn the win on the mound for the Bulldogs.
John Whitney and
Zak Spurrier also saw time on the mound for Samford.
"This was just an all-around great performance," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Yesterday and today, I thought we played as well as we can play after a tough Friday. I told the guys on the field after the game, really since Jacksonville State a few weeks ago, we've played at a really high level."
For Presbyterian, James Green, Matthew Rollison, Emory Guilford, Nick Smith and Cam Mallo had one hit each. Tristan McGregor (1-5) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits to take the loss on the mound for the Blue Hose.
Samford jumped on top with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth. In the third inning,
Trey Higgins singled to right field to drive in Carr for a 1-0 Samford lead. In the fourth inning, Marshall hit a solo home run to right-center field to make the score 2-0.
The Bulldogs plated three runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 5-0.
Luke Boykin singled to drive in Carr for the first run of the inning. McDonald then hit a two-run inside-the-park home run to center field for the game's final two runs.
Samford will travel to Carrollton, Ga., to take on West Georgia on Tuesday, Mar. 31. The game is set for a 4 p.m. (CT) start.
