OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Samford sophomore shortstop
Gus Gandy was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List when the list was released by the College Baseball Foundation Wednesday morning.
The award honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
The top 100 shortstops in the country were announced Wednesday, led by several players putting up tremendous offensive numbers. But because the award is reflective of more than just offense, there are numerous players putting up solid defensive numbers as well.
Entering this week, Gandy was hitting .342 (13-for-38) with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI. Gandy has been solid defensively as well, posting a .950 fielding percentage.
Samford will next play a four-game series at Kennesaw State this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a single game Friday at 3 p.m., a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. All four games can be seen live on ESPN+.
