ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Samford women's basketball delivered a resilient performance to upset No. 3 seed Wofford 59-57 in the Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinal Thursday at Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville. The Bulldogs advance to the next round after holding off a late Terriers rally.
The Bulldogs, who had dropped both regular season meetings to Wofford, started slow and trailed 16-11 after the opening quarter. They responded with a dominant second frame, holding the Terriers to just seven points on 14 percent shooting while outscoring them 17-7. Samford took a 28-23 lead into halftime, riding defensive pressure and efficient offense.
A decisive third quarter saw Samford surge ahead, scoring 23 points and pushing their lead to as many as 18. Wofford battled back in the fourth, narrowing the gap with a 14-8 run, but Samford made key stops and clutch baskets—including a crucial jumper from Sierra Godbolt—to survive the comeback and secure the win.
Godbolt led Samford with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, pacing the Bulldogs on both ends. Briana Rivera added 14 points and connected on four three-pointers, continuing her season-long perimeter shooting excellence. Inside, Emily Snoddy anchored the defense with 12 rebounds, 9 points and 3 blocks.
Samford will continue on in the Southern Conference Tournament playing in the semifinal against No. 2 seed ETSU. The game is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 12:15 p.m. CT.
