BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped an 11-1 decision in seven innings to 17
th-ranked Mississippi State Tuesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The game was played in front of 2,113 fans, the second-largest crowd in stadium history.
With the loss, Samford fell to 17-18 on the season. Mississippi State improved its record to 27-10 with the win.
For Samford at the plate,
Jake Souders went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Pierce Dutton and
Jackson Harris added one hit each for Samford.
Ryan Vermillion (1-1) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing seven runs on three hits to take the loss.
Mississippi State was led by Ace Reese, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Reed Stallman went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Kevin Milewski also homered for MSU, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Maddox Miller (2-2) pitched 2.0 hitless innings in relief to earn the win on the mound for the visiting Bulldogs.
Mississippi State plated two runs in the first inning and five runs in the second inning to race out to a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, with two outs, Samford's Dutton tripled to center field. Souders then singled down the left-field line to cut the MSU lead to 7-1.
Mississippi State added four runs in the top of the fifth inning to push the lead to 11-1. Samford was unable to score the rest of the way as MSU took the 11-1 win in seven innings on the run rule.
Samford will play a three-game Southern Conference series at UNC Greensboro over the weekend. The teams are set to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
