GAME NOTES--SAMFORD AT UNCG (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team will travel to Greensboro, N.C., for a three-game Southern Conference series at UNC Greensboro this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
Samford and UNC Greensboro have met 55 previous times, with Samford holding a 35-20 series lead. Last season, the Bulldogs swept three games from UNCG in a series played at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Samford took the games by scores of 14-2 (7 inn.), 12-2 (7 inn.) and 12-4. The home team has won the series between the two teams for the last five seasons in a row.
Samford comes into the weekend with a record of 17-18 overall and 5-4 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs dropped an 11-1 decision to 17th-ranked Mississippi State Tuesday night. Last weekend, the team swept a three-game series from VMI at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Samford is scheduled to start right-handed pitcher
Joseph Lee (1-0, 4.01 ERA) on Friday. Right-hander
Mason Blasche (2-5, 6.00 ERA) is set to start on Saturday, while right-handed pitcher
Noah Berry (3-1, 2.28 ERA) will start the Sunday series finale for the Bulldogs.
Samford has been led at the plate so far this season by
Jake Souders, hitting .403 (54-of-134) with nine home runs and 31 RBI.
Luke Boykin leads the team in home run with 10, and in RBI with 34.
Gus Gandy is hitting .319 (38-of-119) with six doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI.
Cade Carr is hitting .304 (38-of-125), while
Trey Higgins is hitting .299 (32-of-107).
UNC Greensboro comes into the series with a record of 15-22 overall and 2-7 in SoCon play. The Spartans dropped an 11-8 decision to Campbell Tuesday night. Last weekend, UNCG played a non-conference series at Northern Kentucky, dropping two-of-three games.
UNCG is scheduled to start left-handed pitcher Noah Chapman (2-4, 7.60 ERA) on Friday. The Spartans will start right-handed pitcher J.T. Weaver (0-3, 9.87 ERA) on Saturday, and UNCG has not named a starter for Sunday's contest yet.
The Spartans have been led at the plate by Jake Mueller, batting .333 (47-of-141) with 10 doubles, five home runs and 27 RBI. Jacob Budzik is hitting .330 (38-of-115) with 15 doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI.
