Samford Baseball Completes Sweep At UNCG With 14-1 Run-Rule Win Sunday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford baseball team completed its series sweep at UNC Greensboro with a 14-1 win in seven innings Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

"This was just a completed performance by our guys, today and all weekend," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Today was in blow-out fashion, but the first two games were tight late and we were able to extend it both times. Today, we kind of jumped out early."

The Bulldogs improved their record to 20-18 overall and 8-4 in Southern Conference play with the win. UNCG fell to 15-25 overall and 2-10 in league play.

Luke Boykin led Samford in the win, going 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and five RBI. Gus Gandy doubled and drove in three runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate, while Cade Carr tripled and drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance.

Starting pitcher Noah Berry (4-1) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford. John Malone and Drew Druckenmiller also saw time on the mound for Samford.

For UNCG, Brantley Truitt went 2-for-3 at the plate. John Horton (2-2) took the loss on the mound for UNCG, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.

Samford started fast, plating three runs in the first inning. Jake Souders, Boykin and Gandy drove in a run each as Samford grabbed an early 3-0 lead. Samford added a run in the third inning on a double by Boykin and one in the fourth inning when Parker McDonald scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 Samford advantage.

In the fifth inning, Samford scored five runs to push the lead to 10-0. Boykin led the inning off with a home run. Gandy later doubled to drive in Jeffrey Ince. Pierce Dutton then singled to drive in Gandy. The final two runs scored when Carr tripled to drive in Dutton and Souders for a 10-run Samford lead.

After UNCG plated its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Samford added four runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 14-1. Boykin singled to drive in two runs, Ince singled to drive in one run and Boykin scored on a sacrifice fly by Gandy.

Next up, Samford will face Auburn on Tuesday, April 21, at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
