BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford softball team had two players earn Southern Conference weekly honors this afternoon when the league office released its awards. After a 4-0 week, Makinley Turner and Katie Campbell earned the Player and Pitcher of the Week awards.

Turner was named Pitcher of the Week for the second-straight week in the conference. The junior pitched 9.1 innings in appearances against Alabama and Furman as she went 2-0 over the two games. Turner came in relief and earned the win as the Bulldogs defeated No. 3 Alabama. She threw 2.1 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three Crimson Tide batters. She followed that up with a complete game at Furman on Saturday as the Bulldogs won 8-1, where the right-hander allowed just five hits, five strikeouts, and one unearned run.

For the second time this season, Campbell was named conference Player of the Week. The Cape Coral, Florida native hit a game-clinching double to left field in the fifth inning, driving two runs across home plate and putting Samford up, 3-2, which ended up being the final score against Alabama. The Bulldogs' win over the Crimson Tide marked the program's first win over their in-state foe in 29 years, and was the highest-ranked win for the squad. In a doubleheader at Furman on April 18, the junior had three hits, four RBIs, a walk, and a run scored as Samford won the two games by scores of 8-1 and 14-1. In the series finale the next day, Campbell was 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBIs, and three runs scored.

The Bulldogs have been on a tear as a team, winning five straight games. They sit in second place in the SoCon with Western Carolina with an 11-4 record, two games behind UNCG. Samford is back in action on Tuesday as they travel to face West Georgia. The Wolves have a 13-35 record on the season and the game can be followed with links here.
