GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. MERCER (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team will play host to Mercer in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 12 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Samford and Mercer have met 119 previous times, with Samford holding a 60-59 series lead. Last season, the teams split four meetings. Mercer won two-of-three regular games in Macon, but Samford came back to take a 5-1 win in the Southern Conference Tournament.
Samford comes into this weekend's series with a record of 23-19 overall and 8-4 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs' midweek game against Jacksonville State was rained out. Last weekend, Samford swept three games from USC Upstate.
Samford is scheduled to start right-handed pitcher
Joseph Lee (3-0, 4.05 ERA) on Friday, right-hander
Mason Blasche (3-5, 5.43 ERA) on Saturday and righty
Noah Berry (4-1, 2.61 ERA) on Sunday.
Samford has been led at the plate so far this season by
Jake Souders, hitting .391 (63-of-161) with 10 home runs and 39 RBI.
Luke Boykin leads the team in home runs with 12 and in RBI with 42.
Gus Gandy is hitting .336 (48-of-143) with 10 doubles, three home runs and 20 RBI.
Cade Carr is hitting .331 (51-of-154) with seven doubles, 10 home runs and 37 RBI.
Pierce Dutton has a .300 (24-of-80) average, while
Jeffrey Ince is hitting .296 (37-of-125).
Mercer enters the weekend with a record of 33-12 overall and 7-5 in Southern Conference play. The Bears earned a 10-9 win over Georgia Southern Wednesday night. Last weekend, Mercer swept a three-game series from Wofford.
Mercer has listed right-handed pitcher Garrett Lambert (3-0, 4.09 ERA), right-hander Miguel Hugas (7-2, 5.79 ERA) and right-handed pitcher Jeb Johnson (2-2, 5.06 ERA) as its starting pitchers for this weekend.
Mercer has been led at the plate so far this season by Titan Kamaka, batting .416 (64-of-154) with 20 doubles, five home runs and 38 RBI. Braydon Kersey leads the team in home runs with 17, while Chris Katz holds the team lead in RBI with 57.
