BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped an 8-6 decision in the second game of a three-game Southern Conference series with Wofford Friday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the loss, Samford fell to 27-24 overall and 11-9 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improved its record to 34-19 overall and 12-8 in league play.
Samford was led in the loss by
Pierce Dutton, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Cade Carr went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while
Jake Souders went 2-for-5 with a double.
Eddie Marshall homered for the second-straight game, going 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Noah Berry (5-2) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
Andrew Marble,
Will Andre and
Trey Sanders also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.
For Wofford, Ben Timblin went 5-for-5 with two home runs, a triple and seven RBI. Collen Condon (7-2), pitched 7.0 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out nine batters to earn the win for the Terriers. Austin Laughlin picked up his second save of the season, tossing 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits.
Wofford got the scoring started with two runs in the top of the first inning. Samford answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning when
Luke Boykin scored on a ground out by Marshall to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Terriers added two runs in the top of the third inning on Timblin's first two-run homer of the game to make the score 4-1. In the bottom of the third inning, Carr doubled to drive in
Jeffrey Ince to close to within 4-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, Timblin hit his second two-run shot to push the lead to 6-2. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Marshall hit a solo home run to center field to make the score 6-3. Later that inning, Dutton singled to drive in
Parker McDonald to cut the lead to 6-4.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Carr scored on a sacrifice fly by Marshall to bring Samford to within one run at 6-5. Wofford, however, plated two runs in the top of the ninth inning to push the lead to 8-5. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Samford's
Gus Gandy scored on a Wofford error, but the Bulldogs could not push another run across, making the final score 8-6.
The teams will conclude their series and the regular season with a game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
