BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a 13-3, seven-inning win over Wofford Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The Bulldogs ended the regular season with a record of 28-24 overall and 12-9 in Southern Conference play. Wofford finished the regular season with a mark of 34-20 overall and 12-9 in league play. Samford will enter next week's Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play its first game on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
Samford was led in the win by
Eddie Marshall, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
Luke Boykin went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Jeffrey Ince went 2-for-4 with an RBI,
Pierce Dutton went 2-for-4 with two RBI,
Parker McDonald went 2-for-4 and
Gus Gandy went 2-for-3.
Jake Souders drove in two runs in the game for Samford.
John Malone (2-1) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
Mason Blasche and
Austin Tommasini also saw time on the mound for Samford.
For Wofford, Niko Brini went 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run and two RBI. Miller Alston (0-2) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits to take the loss for the Terriers.
Samford took control of the game early, plating four runs in the first inning and four more in the second inning. In the first inning, Souders and Boykin both had RBI singles and Souders scored on a wild pitch. Boykin scored the final run of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Marshall for a 4-0 lead. In the second inning, Boykin and
Trey Higgins had an RBI single each and Marshall drove in two runs with a double to make the score 8-0.
Wofford plated two runs in the third inning and one run in the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 8-3.
The Bulldogs added five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game at 13-3 on the mercy rule. Dutton drove in two runs in the inning, while Ince, Souders and Boykin drove in a run each.
The Southern Conference Tournament will begin on Wednesday. The full bracket will be released by the league office later this weekend.
