CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Samford baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at The Citadel Friday at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. Samford dropped the first game, 10-4 and then fell in game two by a score of 8-0.
With the losses, Samford fell to 25-23 overall and 9-8 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel improved its record to 27-22 overall and 8-9 in league play.
In the first game for Samford,
Luke Boykin and
Eddie Marshall each homered, driving in a run each.
Pierce Dutton and
Gus Gandy drove in one run each as well.
Joseph Lee (3-2) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up five runs on five hits and striking out five batters to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
For The Citadel in game one, Michael Gibson went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI. T.J. Anderson also homered for The Citadel, going 1-for-4 with three RBI. Will Holmes (5-4) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on one hit and striking out a career-high 12 batters to earn the win on the mound.
The Citadel plated two runs in the first inning, two runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth inning and another run in the fifth inning to build a 6-0 lead. In the top of the sixth inning, Gandy tripled to drive in
Jackson Harris, and Gandy later scored on a sacrifice fly by Dutton to cut the lead to 6-2.
The Citadel added three runs on a homer by Anderson to make the score 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Boykin hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 9-3. After The Citadel added a run in the bottom of the seventh, Marshall hit a solo home run to right field to make the final score 10-4.
In the second game, Samford was led by
Cade Carr, going 4-for-4 at the plate. Gandy went 2-for-3 for Samford in the second game.
Mason Blasche (3-7) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up five runs, just four earned, on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
The Citadel was led in game two by Jayden Williams, going 2-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBI. Andrew Buffkin (5-2) pitched the complete 9.0 innings, allowing no runs on nine hits and striking out six batters to earn the win.
The Citadel scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, The Citadel's Williams hit a grand slam to give the home Bulldogs a 5-0 advantage. The Citadel added a run in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh to make the final score 8-0.
