BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to cross-town rival UAB on Senior Night Thursday evening at Shauna Yelton Field.

Prior to the game, Samford's seniors, Peyton Hull, Avery Stevens, Sam De Luca, Brinley Murphy, Martha Bishop, Mary-Ainsley Alack and Caroline Smith were honored on the field.

With the loss, Samford fell to 3-2-3 on the season. UAB improved its record to 3-4-1 with the victory.

For Samford in the loss, Murphy had a team-high four shots. Mamie Carman added three shots, including one shot on goal for the Bulldogs.

Samford goalkeeper Hull saved three shots, allowing the two goals. This marks the first time Samford has allowed more than one goal in a game this season.

For UAB, Avery Berryman and Vita Naihin scored a goal each. Lailah Stewart and Caitlin Keeling had an assist each for the Blazers. UAB goalkeeper Macie Murphy saved five shots without allowing a goal.

The teams played through a scoreless first half. The Blazers broke the scoreless tie when Berryman scored off an assist from Stewart in the 67^th minute for a 1-0 UAB lead. Just three minutes later, Naihin scored off an assist from Keeling to make the score 2-0.

As a team, Samford outshot UAB, 15-13. Each team had five shots on goal and each team had seven corner kicks. Samford had 15 fouls to seven for UAB.

Samford will open Southern Conference play with a game at Western Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 20. The game is set for a 12 p.m. (CT) start from Cullowhee, N.C.
