High School: Was a star on both the football and baseball fields at Hickory High School in North Carolina . . . in his football career, he passed for over 9,000 yards and 106 touchdowns, completing 70 percent of his passes . . . led his team to a state championship and was the championship game MVP . . . was named the Conference Player of the Year and the Golden Helmet Western North Carolina Player of the Year.
