Rick Herzog returns to Samford for his
fifth season as the linebackers coach.
In 2002, he helped former linebackers
Derrick Wheeler and Matthew Forester earn
I-AA All-Independent honors.
Herzog, 55, is a 30-year veteran of
collegiate and high school coaching. He came
to Samford from Griffin (Ga.) High School,
where he served as defensive coordinator in
2001.
Previously, Herzog was the defensive
coordinator at Northeast Mississippi Junior
College in 2000. He also served as defensive
backs coach, linebackers coach and defensive
coordinator at Jacksonville State, Middle
Tennessee State, Arkansas State and
Mississippi College. He was elected to the
Mississippi College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Herzog was the head coach at Marengo
Academy for seven years, where he posted
a record of 69-12 and won two state
championships.
Herzog earned his B.S. in education in
1973 from Mississippi College, where he
lettered four years at wide receiver (1969-72)
and earned Kodak All-American honors in
1972. He was also a two-time MVP of his
team at Mississippi College, and he was voted
the Most Outstanding Athlete at the school by
the Jackson Touchdown Club.
He is a native of Mobile and graduate of
Baker High School.
