James Hanger

James Hanger enters his second season as a full-time member of the Samford Volleyball staff full-time after serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2010 season.

Prior to coming to Samford, Hanger worked at Christian Brothers University, an NCAA Division II school in Memphis, Tenn., where he served as assistant coach from 2006 to 2008. He then came to Birmingham in 2009 to coach the Shades Mountain Christian Eagles and was honored as the Hoover/Birmingham Metro volleyball "Coach of the Year" for a tremendous season that ended at the Alabama High School State Championships. Hanger brings 14 years of coaching experience in all levels of volleyball. He has been actively involved in USA Volleyball High Performance which acts as a pipeline to identify and train potential Olympic volleyball players and college bound athletes. Hanger has a background in physical fitness and has used this experience as the strength and conditioning coach for the CBU volleyball team as well as personal training. In 2002, Hanger graduated from Drury University in Springfield, MO with degrees in Secondary Education, English, and a minor in Global Studies and Cultural Diversity.

He currently resides in Irondale with his wife, Carol Sue, who is in her first year of an anesthesiology residency at UAB. Hanger is also employed at Regions Bank.
