'Dogs' Montgomery Named SoCon Player Of The Week

Samford’s sophomore goalkeeper registered key shutouts against The Citadel and College of Charleston

Sophomore Melissa Montgomery has compiled a brilliant 7-1-2 record in goal this season.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford soccer player Melissa Montgomery earned Southern Conference Player of the Week honors Monday as College Sports Madness officially released its prestigious weekly honors.

Montgomery, the Bulldogs' sophomore native of Georgetown, Texas, turned in the best back-to-back performances of her young collegiate career over the weekend as she earned consecutive road shutouts against The Citadel and College of Charleston.

During a crucial Southern Conference road trip, Montgomery made five key saves in a 2-0 victory at The Citadel on Friday. She then tallied three game-saving stops versus College of Charleston on Sunday. With her 1-0 shutout win over the Cougars, Montgomery notched the third shutout of her first season as Samford's starting goalkeeper.

With the Bulldogs' crucial road wins over the weekend, Samford extended its undefeated streak against conference opponents to 22-consecutive matches. The Bulldogs have not been defeated by a SoCon rival since dropping a 1-0 decision to UNCG in the championship match of the SoCon Tournament on Nov. 7, 2010.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs play host to the UNCG Spartans for yet another critical SoCon match to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.

Friday's contest will be highlighted by the Bulldogs' annual Senior Night festivities. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as Samford's senior class consisting of Sabbath McKiernan-Allen, Kaley Blanton and Adrianne Mancino will be honored with a special presentation.
