Soccer Looks To Bounce Back Sunday Against Elon

The Bulldogs are coming off a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to UNCG on Friday

Sophomore Lindsey Hansen and the Bulldogs own a 2-1-1 all-time record against Elon.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team will play its final regular-season home match of the 2012 campaign Sunday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against the Elon Phoenix in another key Southern Conference contest to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.

Samford (9-6-2, 6-1-2 SoCon) heads into the match looking to erase the ill effects of Friday's 1-0 home setback against UNCG. The Bulldogs' loss snapped a 22-match undefeated streak against conference opponents that dated back to Nov. 7, 2010.

In Friday's first-place showdown with UNCG, Samford outshot the Spartans, 19-6, but couldn't find the back of the net. UNCG's game-winning goal was scored by Katherine Rodriguez in the 41st minute of play.

Elon (6-6-6, 4-1-4 SoCon) enters Sunday's contest riding the positive momentum of a seven-match undefeated streak. Since dropping a 2-1 decision against Appalachian State on Sept. 23, the Phoenix has played to conference draws with The Citadel, Wofford and Davidson, as well as victories over College of Charleston, Furman, Georgia Southern and Chattanooga.

In Friday's 5-0 trouncing of Chattanooga, Elon registered its third straight shutout and received a pair of first-half goals from Catherine Brinkman. The Phoenix tacked on two more scores in the second half with goals from Nicole Dennion and Taylor Glenn.

Kate Murphy earned the start in goal for the Phoenix and played just over 66 minutes in the shutout. Shannon Cosgrove finished the final 24 minutes for Elon in goal and tallied one save.

Elon outshot Chattanooga 20-6, as the Phoenix put 12 shots on-target in the win.

Samford will square off against Elon for only the fifth time in school history Sunday. The Bulldogs own a 2-1-1 all-time record in the series, but have not defeated the Phoenix since a 1-0 road triumph in 2009. Last season, the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Elon, N.C., while the Phoenix recorded a 1-0 victory in 2010.

Sunday's match will be live-streamed for FREE via Samford Sports TV, as will the rest of the Bulldogs' home matches this season. Head to SamfordSports.com/showcase and click on the event.

Following Sunday's key home match against Elon, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Wednesday at 5 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for their regular-season finale versus the Chattanooga Mocs. The matchup will be held at Finley Stadium (20,668).
