CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Samford University women's golf team will continue play in its 2012 fall season Monday as the Bulldogs compete in the 14
th Annual Great Smokies Intercollegiate to be held at the par- 72, 5,932-yard Waynesville Inn - Golf Resort and Spa in Waynesville, N.C.
The competition is slated to be held Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 17-18, as a total of 84 golfers will vie for the tournament championship. The annual two-round event will be hosted by Western Carolina University and has been held every season since 1999.
The 2012 Great Smokies Intercollegiate consists of two days of golf beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (CDT) on Monday, Sept. 17, with the final round also teeing off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m., on Tuesday.
The Waynesville Inn - Golf Resort and Spa was established in 1926, nestled on the hills and valleys of Western North Carolina. The 27-hole course sits on a former dairy farm and features rolling fairways ending in bent grass greens. The course was designed by renowned golf course designer, Donald Ross, who also designed Pinehurst #2, which hosted the 2005 U.S. Open. Golf Digest gave the Waynesville Inn - Golf Resort and Spa a four-star rating.
This week's tournament will mark Samford's second competition of the 2012 fall season. Last week, the Bulldogs participated in the Terrier Intercollegiate and earned a seventh-place finish in the 13-team tournament hosted by Wofford University at the par-72, 5,972-yard Country Club of Spartanburg.
Samford concluded Tuesday's final round of competition with a score of 307, two strokes better than Monday's first-round tally of 309. The Bulldogs' final team total of 616 was good enough for a seventh-place finish in the season-opening competition and was just two strokes behind Elon for the sixth-place position.
Individually, Samford was paced throughout the tournament by sophomore
Emily Stallings. Stallings, the Bulldogs' highly-touted native of Fayetteville, Ga., finished with a 36-hole score of 150 (73-77) and placed 15
th in the individual standings.
Samford's
Alex Jasper also registered a top-20 performance as she carded a second-round score of 75 to place 17
th in the final rankings. The Bulldogs' junior native of Clarksville, Tenn., finished the tournament with a total of 151 after posting a first-round score of 75 on Monday.
Rounding out Samford's individual scoring from the 2012 Terrier Intercollegiate were
Natalie Mitchell (81-77=158),
Bailey Gray (80-78=158) and
Kayla Turner (80-81=161).
Play in the 2012 Great Smokies Intercollegiate will consist of starts in both the first and second rounds Monday and Tuesday at 8 a.m. (CDT). Admission is free and the tournament is open to the public.
