BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Samford Track and Field continued its 2013 season Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex, competing at the Auburn Indoor Invitational.
Tyler Kemp and
Nathan Hendershot both set new school records while numerous others set new personal bests and even beat facility and meet records.
Kemp and Alabama's Justin Fondren cleared identical heights of 6-10.25 (2.09m), though Fondren won the ensuing jump-off to take the event while Kemp placed second. Nonetheless, his mark is a new school record that bests his previous record of 6-8.5 (2.05m), set at last season's SoCon Championships.
Hendershot also set a new school record in the men's 800 meters, running 1:51.78 to place second, just three-tenths of a second shy of Alabama's Ken Taylor in 1:51.68. The top three competitors in the event all broke the previous meet record of 1:52.29. Samford's Jones finished just shy of that group, placing fourth with a personal-best time of 1:52.57.
The women's distance medley relay of
Marie Demedicis,
Leslie Graf,
Anna Laura Irvine and
Rachel Roberts won the event with a time of 1:56.01, which beats the previous Auburn Indoor Invitational meet record of 12:14.75, set last season by Alabama. The men's team of
Layton Dorsett, Hendershot,
Adam Jones and
Brandon Hazouri placed second in the relay in 10:14.16, which is nearly a minute better than the previous Crossplex facility record of 11:13.10.
Lauren D'Alessio turned in another stellar distance performance Saturday, placing second in the women's mile in 4:51.47. All four of Samford's competitors in the event set new personal bests, including
Rachel Roberts (4:58.60), Irvine (5:03.74) and
Rachel Wooten (5:17.81).
Defending outdoor pole vault champion and last year's indoor runner-up
Owen Wagoner finished second in Saturday's pole vault, clearing 16-6.75 (5.05m) while
Ryan Cook was just behind in fourth (16-0.75, 4.90m). Samford's other top-ten finishers Saturday included
Chenelle Terry in the women's high jump (6th, 5-7.75, 1.72m),
Luke Weishaar in the men's 3,000 meters (6th, 8:36.43), Hazouri with a personal-best in the men's mile (9th, 4:15.51) and
Layton Dorsett right behind him in 10th (4:16.05).
Samford will have next weekend off before heading north to South Bend, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational, which starts on Friday, Feb. 1 and concludes on Saturday, Feb. 2.
