BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University track and field team continued to excel in the early portion of its 2018 indoor season Friday as the Bulldogs registered six events winners and 15 top-3 finishes at the Samford Invitational held at the CrossPlex.

Against some of the top competitors in the Southeast, Samford's student-athletes continued to shine in just their second meet of the 2018 campaign.

The Bulldogs'
Megan Meadow and
Charlotte Krause swept the top-two finishes in the women's triple jump. Meadow garnered first place in the event with a distance of 11.76 meters, while Krause followed closely at 11.56 meters to earn the second spot.

Krause, Samford's talented sophomore from Mobile, also earned a third-place finish in the high jump. She closed out the competition with a height of 1.65 meters, while Arkansas State's Darragh May won the event with a jump of 1.74 meters.

The Bulldogs' fellow sophomore
Emmanuel Tait earned the championship title in the 60-meter hurdles as Samford's All-Southern Conference performer notched a time of 8.23 in the event. Tait also earned a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash Friday by posting a time of 6.82 in the competition.

Samford also turned in first-place performances in the men's high jump, the men's pole vault and the women's mile.

Junior
Keyth Fightmaster took the title in the high jump with a clearance of 2.14 meters, while senior
Tray Oates, the reigning SoCon Field Athlete of the Week, dominated the competition in the pole vault. Oates posted a winning mark of 5.30 meters Friday to top South Alabama's Niel Giliomee's height of 5.20.

In the women's mile, freshman
Abbey Zane earned a first-place finish in the event with a time of 5:10.12. She defeated Lipscomb's Lauren Flynt, who posted a 5:11.09. Also in the event, Samford's
Allie Nelson, a true freshman, took fifth place with a time of 5:15.55.

The Bulldogs'
Karisa Nelson, Allie's older sister and Samford's only Division I national champion in school history, registered an impressive second-place finish Friday.
Karisa Nelson, who won the national championship in the indoor mile last season, ran a time of 2:05.87 in the 800-meter run in the Samford Invitational.

Karisa Nelson finished behind only Helen Schlactenhaufen of Freedom TC, who recently graduated from Dartmouth. Schlactenhaufen posted a time of 2:04.84.

Rounding out the Bulldogs' top performances Friday were third-place finishes from
Marquis Barnes (Long jump),
Allison Holland (200-meter dash),
Haley Ward (3000-meter run) and
Josh Salter (8:34.98).

The Bulldogs' athletes also recorded top finishes in the 2018 Samford Multi this week.

In the two-day competition that started Thursday, Samford's
Selena Popp earned the championship title in the pentathlon with a score of 3,912, while the Bulldogs'
Austin Eck (4,063), Thomas Ozburn (3,955) and
Hunter Schlatter (3,482) took third through fifth place in the heptathlon.
