BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team will face its final non-conference opponent of the 2013 regular season Sunday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs welcome the winless Francis Marion Patriots to the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium for only the second all-time meeting between the teams.
Samford (10-4-1) heads into the contest looking to bounce back from a 3-2 Southern Conference loss to The Citadel on Friday. The defeat proved to be the Bulldogs' first home setback of the 2013 campaign as they moved to 6-1-1 when playing at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium this season. The loss also snapped Samford's seven-match home undefeated streak, which dated back to Oct. 28, 2012.
Against The Citadel on Friday, the Bulldogs received goals from true freshman
Taylor Borman and junior
Amanda Abbott, who leads Samford with seven goals scored this season.
Francis Marion (0-14) enters Sunday's meeting with aspirations of winning its first match of the season. The Patriots have not been victorious in 2013 and their losing streak dates back to Oct. 24, 2012, when they earned a 3-0 triumph over South Carolina State.
Sunday's match will be just the second all-time meeting between Samford and Francis Marion. The first meeting between the teams occurred Aug. 30, 2009, as Samford posted a 3-0 victory held at Bulldog Field. Samford's triumph proved to be part of a six-match winning streak early in its 2009 campaign.
Following Sunday's non-conference matchup with Francis Marion, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel to Greensboro, N.C., for a key SoCon road contest against UNCG Spartans to be held at the UNCG Soccer Stadium (3,540).
