SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Chattanooga (4-21, 3-7 SoCon) - After the Mocs' big win over Samford on Oct. 9, they have since lost four of their last five matches, falling to 3-7 in conference play. Though they currently sit in 10th place in the conference, qualifying for the tournament is not out of the question as they are only one game behind eighth-place Wofford and two games behind seventh-place Appalachian State with a match against each team yet to play this season. Briana Reid leads the team in kills with 209, 100 of which have come in conference play, while Allie Davenport trails close behind with 197. Anne Bachmann paces the attack with 435 assists while Melissa Green leads the defense with 364 digs.
Davidson (12-12, 3-7 SoCon) - After starting the SoCon season 2-2, a loss to Samford on Oct. 12 started a precipitous slide for the Wildcats as they have gone 1-5 over their last six conference matches. Over that stretch, their lone win came against Chattanooga on Oct. 13 but the Wildcats have put up a fight in their losses, avoiding a sweep in all but one of them. At the pins, Davidson is led by senior Caroline Brown with 305 kills while fellow senior Tindall Sewell is the anchor at the middle, owning a .337 attack percentage with 165 kills and 90 blocks. Freshman setter Mikayla Derochie has made a name for herself early on, winning five-straight SoCon Freshman of the Week awards from Sept. 16 thorugh Oct. 7.
ALL-TIME VERSUS WEEKEND OPPONENTS
Samford is 21-10 all-time against Chattanooga and is 9-2 against them as SoCon opponents. Chattanooga's 3-0 win over Samford earlier this season was their first conference win over Samford since 2010 and their first home win over Samford since 1999, which was also a 3-0 sweep.
Samford's 3-1 win over Davidson earlier this season pushes the Bulldogs' all-time record over the Wildcats to 9-1. Davidson's lone win in the all-time series was a five-set win at home during the 2010 season. Since that match, Samford has won the past five meetings, only losing two sets in the process.
RECORD WATCH
Multiple Bulldogs have made their way into the record books at Samford this season, with some on the cusp of breaking new records while others have a chance to move up even further in the standings.
Chelsi Carter is having her most productive defensive season yet, as she is only 18 digs shy of cracking the single-season top ten. She currently has 378, putting her within striking distance of Callaway Logan's 2005 total of 396. At her current pace, Carter could finish the regular season with around 470 digs, which would rank fourth all-time at Samford. She is also currently sixth all-time in career digs with 1,006, only eight digs from Krista Kettering (2000-03) in fifth with 1,014.
Thanks to a combined hitting percentage of .462 over the past weekend,
Katie Murphy's career total jumped to .378, which puts her in first place. This barely edges out former teammate
Lauren Hutchinson's total of .377, set over three seasons from 2010 through 2012. Murphy's single-season total of .409 currently ranks third, trailing her own total from 2011 (.427) and Hutchinson's record percentage from 2011 of .428.
After becoming the 11th player in Samford history to break 1,000 career kills on Oct. 19,
Michaela Reesor jumped up one spot in the all-time rankings to 10th with 1,032 career kills. At her current pace, she would finish the regular season with 1,112 career kills, ranking her eighth all-time after only three seasons. Murphy currently sits at fifth all-time with 1,166 career kills and, at her current pace, would end the regular season with 1,230 career kills.
