Summerlin And Shade Named Players Of The Year

Andy Summerlin was named the SoCon's Offensive Player of the Year by the media.
SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Samford senior quarterback Andy Summerlin and senior linebacker Justin Shade were named Southern Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, by the SoCon Sports Media Association, when the league released its postseason awards Tuesday morning.

The SoCon released its full All-Conference teams for both the media and the coaches. The media named Appalachian State running back Marcus Cox as its Freshman of the Year, and Furman's Bruce Fowler as the Coach of the Year.

The coaches named Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman Offensive Player of the Year, and Chattanooga defensive lineman Davis Tull Defensive Player of the Year. The coaches named Cox Freshman of the Year, and Furman offensive lineman Dakota Dozier won the Jacobs Blocking Award. Chattanooga's Russ Huesman was the coaches' selection for Coach of the Year.

Summerlin led the conference and ranks eighth nationally with 296.6 passing yards per game. Overall, Summerlin passed for a school-record 3,559 yards, to go along with his 25 touchdowns. He threw for more than 400 yards in three different contests this season, including a school-record 495 yards against Georgia Southern. The senior also ranked among the nation's best in pass efficiency (143.5) and total offense (290.5 ypg). Summerlin led the Southern Conference and ranked 24th in efficiency, while coming in at No. 14 in total offense.

Shade ranks 18th nationally and led the league with 10.0 tackles per game during the regular season, including a SoCon single-game high this season with 19 stops against Southeastern Louisiana. The senior tied for the league lead in sacks (9.0) and led the conference in tackles for loss (15.5 TFL). He added five pass break-ups, a quarterback hurry and was credited with two forced fumbles on the season. Shade helped anchor a unit that was the third-best in the conference in total defense (377.9 ypg).

Joining Summerlin and Shade on the first team media All-Conference team were offensive lineman Kasey Morrison, wide receiver Kelsey Pope, safety Jaquiski Tartt and return specialist Fabian Truss. Truss was also named second team by the media as a running back, and he was joined on the second team by tight end Zeke Walters, defensive lineman Jerry Mathis, defensive lineman Jeremy Towns and place-kicker Warren Handrahan.

Samford's representatives on the coaches' first team were Truss as both a running back and return specialist, Pope, Shade and Tartt. On the coaches' second team from Samford were Summerlin, Walters, offensive lineman Kasey Morrison, Mathis, Towns and defensive back James Bradberry.

The SoCon coaches also named an All-Freshman team. Handrahan, wide receiver Karel Hamilton and defensive lineman Jared Holloway were the Samford players named to the All-Freshman team.

Samford finished the regular season with a record of 8-4 overall and 6-2 in SoCon play, earning a share of the football program's first SoCon title. The Bulldogs earned an at-large bid to the Division I-FCS Playoffs and will play at Jacksonville State Saturday night at 7 p.m. The playoff bid is Samford's first since 1992.
