BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- On the opening day of the Samford Multi, multiple school records fell as the Bulldogs got off to a hot start at the Samford Track & Field and Soccer Stadium.
Halfway through the men's heptathlon,
Steven Bastien is the event leader with a school-record day one total of 3,794 points. Bastien also set a school record in the decathlon long jump, winning the event with a distance of 24-1 (7.34m). This breaks
Brandon Bassett's old school record of 22-9 (6.93m), which he would have beaten today with his second-place finish of 23-2.5 (7.07m).
Through four events in the women's heptathlon, Samford's two competitors are sitting in sixth and seventh.
Christian McGuire holds the slim lead over
Ashley Cope with 2,684 and 2,670 points, respectively.
Emily Allen, competing unattached, set a new school record in the women's hammer throw by tossing 186-3 (56.77m) to win the event. This is also a new facility record as her previous best of 182-8 (55.67m) was set at last season's Samford Multi. Teammate
Kristin Brining also set a new personal best in the event, finishing fifth with a throw of 164-4 (50.09m).
The Samford multi continues tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. with the multi events and wraps up with the 1,600-meter relays beginning at 8:35 p.m.
