ELON, N.C. – The Samford University women's tennis team will begin play in the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday at 8 a.m. (CDT) as the eighth-seeded Bulldogs are slated to open the 11-team competition against the ninth-seeded Davidson Wildcats in a first-round contest to be held at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Samford (8-14) heads into Thursday's showdown with aspirations of snapping a four-match losing streak. The Bulldogs' most recent win occurred on March 29 as they tallied a home 5-2 victory against Davidson (9-11) held at the Samford Tennis Center.
Since knocking off the Wildcats, the Bulldogs have suffered consecutive losses to College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga. Samford finished the regular season with a stellar 8-3 record at home, but a winless 0-11 mark when playing on the road.
In their regular-season victory against Davidson, the Bulldogs won the doubles point and then received singles triumphs from Kristin Lewis, Stephanie N'tcha, Emily Mallory and AnnMarie Lyon en route to the pivotal 5-2 team victory. The Wildcats' singles wins occurred in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles contests.
Three of Samford's four singles victories against Davidson came in straight sets. On court No. 1, the Bulldogs' two-time All-SoCon performer Lewis recorded a 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 over the Wildcats' Brites Moniz-Soares. Also victorious were Samford's Mallory and Ntcha.
Samford's Lewis heads into the postseason with a 10-11 record in singles play. The Bulldogs' Mallory and N'tcha are listed at 13-7 and 12-9 in dual-match play this year, respectively.
Davidson enters Thursday's contest in the midst of a two-match losing streak. Since earning a 7-0 home win against Western Carolina on April 6, the Wildcats have dropped back-to-back outings versus Charlotte, 4-3, and Furman, 7-0. Davidson has been defeated in nine of its last 11 matches, dating back to March 14 when the Wildcats toppled No. 72-ranked East Carolina, 4-3.
The winner of Thursday's SoCon Tournament opener will advance to face the top-seeded College of Charleston Cougars at 8 a.m. (CDT) on Friday in a quarterfinal contest to be held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.
