BASTIEN TO COMPETE AT USA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
After a stellar freshman campaign in 2013,
Steven Bastien will be representing the Bulldogs at the USA Junior Decathlon Championships in Des Moines, Iowa at Drake Stadium on June 19-20. The nation's top young athletes ages 16-19 make up the field of 25.
Â
The top four finishers at the meet will earn the chance to represent the United States at the Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships in Medellin, Columbia on August 23-25.
Â
THE COMPETITION
Bastien owns the third-highest qualifying point total in the entire field, only trialing Georgia's Devon Williams (6,916) and Wolf Mahler (7,420) from Belton High School in Texas. Bastien's qualifying mark of 6,823 was set at this season's Samford Multi on March 16 in Birmingham.
Â
In the individual events, Bastien owns the best mark in the field in the long jump at 24-1 (7.34m), with the next-best mark at 23-8.25 (7.22m). He also has the fourth-best time in the 100-meter dash (10.85) and the fifth-best height in the pole vault (15-0.75, 4.59m).
Â
RUNNING IN THE FAMILY
Steven Bastien's success in the decathlon shouldn't come as a surprise given his family history. Thirty-five years ago, his father, Gary, won the USA Junior Decathlon Championship in 1978 representing Eastern Michigan University. Gary went on to compete in the Decathlon at the 1984 Olympic Trials.
Â
BASTIEN IN 2013
Steven Bastien didn't waste any time making a name for himself in his freshman season at Samford, winning three conference titles and setting indoor and outdoor school records along the way.
Â
At the SoCon Indoor Championships, Bastien set a new school record in the long jump of 23-7.25 (7.19m) to post a convincing win on day one, while going on to win a second title on day two in the heptathlon. Those two titles, along with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault, helped earn him Most Outstanding Field Performer and Freshman of the Year honors.
Bastien completed the indoor-outdoor sweep at the SoCon Outdoor Championships in the long jump, winning by half of an inch with a mark of 23-8.75 (7.23m). He set a school record in the long jump earlier in the season at the Samford Multi, jumping 24-1 (7.34m) in the decathlon long jump, helping him to a personal-best 6,823 points in the decathlon that weekend.
