Football Holds Final Scrimmage Of Fall Camp

TRAVIS TRICKETT INTERVIEW

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—
The Samford football team held its final full scrimmage of fall camp Saturday morning at Seibert Stadium.

Saturday's scrimmage, the second of fall camp was mainly a situational scrimmage, putting the players in as many game-type situations as possible.

"Today was really just situational work," Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Travis Trickett said. "We didn't try to get a lot of plays in today, we really just worried about getting in situations and understanding what to do in those situations."

Trickett said he saw a lot of positives during the scrimmage. He also said there are still a lot of things for the team to work on in the next two weeks.

"I thought we were good," Trickett said. "There are some assignments we have to make sure we clean up, but there is always some good you can pull from it. It was good to get into these situations and just let them play and let us (coaches) be off the field so they have to react."

Starting quarterback Andy Summerlin played three series in the scrimmage. In his limited work, Summerlin completed 5-of-10 passes for 40 yards. Backup Ben Neill completed 9-of-18 passes for 123 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown to Karel Hamilton. Carson Barnett completed 4-of-6 passes for 34 yards in the scrimmage.

Stanley Robinson led the running game, rushing five times for 37 yards. D'Morrise Bledsoe had six rushes for 30 yards. Starting running back Fabian Truss was held out of the scrimmage.

In receiving, Javian Ramson caught two passes for 30 yards, while Jauan Davis had five catches for 25 yards. Hamilton hauled in the 40-yard touchdown from Neill late in the scrimmage for the lone touchdown of the day.

Defensively, Sam Pettway had an interception that he returned 75 yards for a touchdown. Jerry Mathis had one fumble recovery, while Mitchell Smith and Jared Holloway had a sack each.

Samford will take Sunday off from practice. The Bulldogs will return to the practice field with the final two-a-day workout of fall camp on Monday. The team will practice in the morning at 7 a.m. in full pads, and in the afternoon at 3:15 p.m. in shells.

Samford opens the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, when the Bulldogs travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in the Georgia Dome. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) start.
