NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford University soccer team used a penalty-kick goal from Molly Pittman in the 48th minute of play Sunday as the Bulldogs earned a key 1-0 exhibition victory in a preseason contest held at E.S. Rose Park.
Samford scored the lone goal of the match in the 48th minute of play as Pittman rifled home a penalty-kick attempt. The Bulldogs were awarded the penalty kick after the Bruins committed a foul in the box. Just a freshman, Pittman scored a goal in her first action of the 2013 preseason.
Samford received a pair of stellar performances in goal from true freshman Katie Peters and junior Melissa Montgomery. Peters earned the start and tallied three saves in nearly 81 minutes of playing time. Montgomery came on in the 81st minute and registered a save in the final 9:04 to play.
The Bulldogs outshot Belmont, 11-5, and totaled eight corner kicks, as compared to two from the Bruins. Offensively, Samford was paced by three shots from true freshman Taylor Borman.
Belmont's four shots Sunday came from Emily Jones, Kim Elmore, Elise DeTrude and Sydney Scheben.
All-time, Samford holds a dominant 9-1 record against the Bruins. Belmont's lone victory in the series occurred Aug. 30, 1997, in the Bulldogs' inaugural match as a collegiate program. Since then, Samford has rattled off nine-consecutive victories over the Bruins and has outscored Belmont by a total of 28-4.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs travel to Memphis, Tenn., for a season-opening contest against the Memphis Tigers to be held at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex (3,000).
