Updating ResultsCHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Samford University women's tennis team will continue play in its 2014 fall season Friday at 7 a.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs are slated to compete in the 32
nd UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic being held this weekend at the Champions Club.
Over 120 collegiate tennis players will make their way to the Scenic City for one of the top fall tournaments in the Southeast Region this weekend. A total of nine women's tennis teams will be represented at the Champions Club from Oct. 3-5. This is the 13th year the prestigious Champions Club has hosted the event.
The draw for the 32nd UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic will feature competitors from nine teams, including Samford, host school Chattanooga, UAB, Eastern Kentucky, UT Martin, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State and Middle Tennessee.
The teams will compete in a total of four singles and doubles flights in the three-day event.
Samford heads to this weekend's tournament with three talented athletes. The Bulldogs'
Carita Moolman,
Stephanie N'tcha and
Savannah Wood will all be competing in the event.
Two weeks ago, Samford opened its 2014-15 campaign at the College of Charleston Invitational and earned three championship titles at the talent-laden event held at Patriots Point.
In singles play, Samford's
Jessica Northcutt and Wood starred in the A2 and B2 brackets, respectively. Northcutt swept Coastal Carolina's Sara Bonder in the championship match, 6-2, 6-3, and closed out the College of Charleston Invitational with an unblemished 3-0 record in singles play.
Wood, Samford's highly-acclaimed true freshman from Woodstock, Ga., also turned in a perfect 3-0 record in the tournament. In the championship contest, Wood breezed past College of Charleston's Grace Baker, 6-4, 6-1, to claim the B2 singles title.
In doubles play, the Bulldogs' tandem of
Yasmeen Ebada and Wood competed in the A2 bracket by knocking off Coastal Carolina's pairing of Romane Delay and Mila Majtan, 8-4, in the consolation title match.
The Steve Baras Memorial Scholarship is an endowment in memory of former men's tennis student-athlete Steve Baras who graduated from Chattanooga in 1974. Over the 31-year history of the endowment, this scholarship has provided assistance for a men's or women's tennis player each season.
