KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – The Samford University men's and women's cross country teams both provided strong showings at this year's Southern Conference Cross Country Championships. The men ran an 8,000 meter race while the women trekked a 5,000 meter course at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex on Friday, Oct. 31.
The Samford women were led by freshman standout
Karisa Nelson who posted a 12
th place finish with a time of 17:41.79, the fastest 5k time the freshman has ran this season. Nelson's teammates put in four other top-25 times to secure a third place finish for Bulldogs in the race.
Furman University took the SoCon Championship with 22 points and was followed by the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga with 71 points and Samford posted 90 points for the third place spot.
The Samford men ran shortly after the completion of the women's 5k in an 8,000 meter event. The Bulldogs tallied a 4
th place finish with 108 points and an average time of 25:32.66. Freshman
Arsène Guillorell led the way with an 11
th place finish and a time of 24:53.43 with junior
Adam Jones notching a 14
th place finish with a time of 25:05.54 in the race.
Furman University completed the sweep of the SoCon Championships as they tallied 15 points and took the top seven finishes in the race. East Tennessee State University locked up second place with 71 points with the Virginia Military Institute placing third with 92 points.
The Bulldogs garnered three All-SoCon Second Team selections with Nelson, Guillorell and
Rachel Wooten while also having four named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team with Nelson, Guillorell,
Megan Roach and
Emma Garner.
