BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford athletics department has hired Ashley Phillips as Spirit and Community Outreach Coordinator, the department announced Monday.
 
In addition to the hiring of Phillips, the athletics department will now oversee the school's dance team. The dance team was previously a student organization associated with the school's band.
 
Phillips is in her second year coaching the school's cheerleaders. In her new role, she will be in charge of the cheerleaders, dance team and the school's official mascot, Spike.
 
Phillips is a 2012 graduate of Jacksonville State University with a degree in exercise science and wellness.
