The Citadel Evens Series With Samford Baseball

Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team evened its Southern Conference series with Samford with a 4-2 win over the visiting Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Park.

The Citadel pitcher James Reeves (3-1) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits to earn the win on the mound. Reeves struck out seven Samford batters without allowing a walk. Skylar Hunter pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit to pick up his sixth save of the season.

"Their pitcher (Reeves) settled in and did a nice job of not giving us any freebies," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "I don't think he walked anybody, and it is going to be tough to win when you don't get a freebie here or there. They played sound defensively and he threw a lot of strikes. We didn't play our best, but they just beat us today."

Samford was led at the plate by Tyler Filliben, going 2-for-5 with a home run and one RBI. Tripp Martin and Drew McWhorter had two hits each as well. Jared Brasher (0-2) pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three runs, just two earned, on three hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.

For The Citadel at the plate, Mason Davis went 2-for-4. Tyler Griffin drove in two runs, going 1-for-4 at the plate. Connor Walsh also drove in a run for The Citadel.

Samford struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Filliben hit a solo home run to left field for the game's first run. Martin was then hit by a pitch and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Martin then scored on a single by Heath Quinn for a 2-0 Samford lead.

The Citadel plated a run in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Drew DeKerlegand reached base on a Samford error, and advanced to second on the play. Walsh then singled to drive in DeKerlegand to cut the Samford lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, The Citadel took the lead by plating two runs. Calvin Orth walked to lead off the inning. With one out, Davis singled, moving Orth to second base. Hughston Armstrong then singled to drive in Orth to tie the score. After Bo Thompson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Griffin hit the ball over the wall in right field, just beyond the foul pole. The ball was originally called a grand slam, but the umpires eventually ruled the play a foul ball. Griffin then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Davis for a 3-2 Citadel lead.

The Citadel added one final run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Davis doubled to lead off the inning. Griffin later doubled to drive in Davis for a 4-2 lead for The Citadel.

Samford loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. The Bulldogs, however, were unable to push a run across and the game ended with a 4-2 win for The Citadel.

Sunday's series finale has been moved up to 11 a.m. (CT) due to predicted inclement weather in the Charleston area. The game can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samford.edu/wvsu.
