Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped a 9-5 decision to 14
th-ranked Alabama Wednesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The two teams combined to hit six home runs in the game. Samford's
Drew McWhorter and
Heath Quinn hit one homer each. For Alabama, Mikey White hit two homers, while Ben Moore and Wade Wass hit one home run each.
Samford's McWhorter and Quinn each went 2-for-5 with a home run and one RBI.
Jared Watson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Danny Rodriguez also went 2-for4 for the Bulldogs.
Samford pitcher
Cody Pugh (3-4) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.

For Alabama, White went 5-for-5, tying a school record for hits in a game, with two home runs and four RBI. Moore was 1-for-4 with his home run and two RBI. Wass also went 1-for-4 with a homer and one RBI. Geoffrey Bramblett (4-1) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits to earn the win on the mound for Alabama,
Alabama jumped on top first with two runs in the top of the first inning. White led the game off with a solo home run to left field for the game's first run. With two outs in the inning, Wass hit another homer to left field for a 2-0 Alabama lead.
The Crimson Tide added a run in the top of the second inning to push their lead to 3-0. With two outs in the inning, White singled. Georgie Salem then doubled to drive in White for a three-run Alabama lead.
Alabama pushed its lead to 5-0 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Will Haynie singled to lead off the inning. With one out, White homered to left-center field for Alabama's fourth and fifth runs of the contest.
Samford got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs in the inning,
Caleb Bryson singled through the left side of the infield.
Brandon Powell then walked and Rodriguez reached base on an infield single to load the bases.
Tripp Martin then walked to score Bryson to make the score 5-1. Watson then reached base on another infield single to drive in Powell to cut the Alabama lead to 5-2.
Samford added two more runs in the fifth inning to make the score 5-4. With one out in the inning, McWhorter hit a home run to left field. Quinn then homered to left field as well, to close Samford to within one run.
Samford had a chance to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Frankie Navarrete singled up the middle to lead off the inning and then moved to second base on a wild pitch with one out. Quinn then singled to left field, and Navarrete advanced to third base, but was thrown out at home, and the score remained 5-4.
Alabama took control of the game with four runs in the top of the eighth inning. Moore hit a two-run home run in the inning, and Chance Vincent and White drove in a run each in the inning to push Alabama's lead to 9-4.
Samford added one final run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the final score 9-5.
Damon Waller led the inning off with a pinch-hit double. With one out, McWhorter singled, moving Waller to third base. With two outs in the inning, Waller scored on a wild pitch for the game's final run.
With the loss, Samford drops to 26-19. Alabama improves to 30-15 with the win.
Samford will return to action Friday, May 2, when the Bulldogs open a three-game Southern Conference series at UNCG. Friday's series opener is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CT). The teams will also play Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
