Baseball Downs Wofford To Reach SoCon Title Game

Heath Quinn doubled twice and drove in a run in Saturday's 12-3 win over Wofford in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament.

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
The third-seeded Samford baseball team advanced to the championship game of the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament with a 12-3 win over sixth-seeded Wofford Saturday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 35-24 on the season. The Bulldogs advance to the tournament title game for the third time in the last four years. Samford will face either Furman or Georgia Southern for the tournament championship Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Wofford ends its season with a record of 32-28.
 
"Our guys did a great job today," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "We've talked a lot about finishing, and our guys did a good job of finishing the game. Wofford threw a guy to start with that we knew nothing about, and he frustrated us for a while. Our guys finally made some adjustments as the game went on, and we did a really great job once they went to their bullpen."
Samford was led at the plate by Drew McWhorter, going 2-for-6 with a double and two RBI. Caleb Bryson went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Heath Quinn went 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Brandon Powell went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Jared Watson and Tyler Filliben also had two hits each for the Bulldogs.
 
Mark Donham (2-0) pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs on seven hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford. Cole Limbaugh started the game on the mound for Samford, tossing 4.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits. Chase Traffica pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit.
 
For Wofford at the plate, Seth Neely went 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and one RBI. Josh Hyman and Eric Brenk had two hits each for the Terriers. Elliot Lance (1-1) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits to take the loss on the mound for Wofford.
 
Wofford jumped on top first with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Neely led the inning off with a home run to right field for a 1-0 Terrier lead.
 
Samford tied the score with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Bryson walked to lead off the inning and was retired when Filliben reached base on a fielder's choice.  Powell then doubled to left-center field to drive in Filliben to knot the score at 1-1.
 
The Bulldogs took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. T.J. Dixon singled to center field to lead off the inning. Dixon moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Watson, and to third base on a fly out by McWhorter. Quinn then doubled to drive in Dixon to make the score 2-1. Bryson then singled up the middle to drive in Quinn for a 3-1 Samford lead.
 
Wofford plated a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Samford lead to 3-2. Hyman singled to lead off the inning, and then moved to third base on a single by Brenk. Hyman then scored on a sacrifice fly by Connor Clancey to bring the Terriers to within one run.
 
Samford took control of the game with eight runs in the top of the seventh inning. McWhorter and Bryson drove in a run each in the inning for Samford. Quinn scored a run on a wild pitch, Bryson, Frankie Navarrete and Watson each scored on errors, and Filliben and Tripp Martin both scored on balks to give Samford an 11-2 lead.
 
Wofford plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the Samford lead to 11-3. Neely doubled with two outs in the inning. James Plaisted then singled to drive in Neely for the Terriers' third run of the contest.
 
Samford added one run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 12-3. With two outs, Watson singled. McWhorter then doubled to drive in Watson for the game's final run.
