Three Football Games To Air On SoCon Package

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Three Samford football games are scheduled to be broadcast live as part of the Southern Conference's broadcast package, released by the league on Thursday. One game will air live on ESPN3, while two others will be available on the newly formed American Sports Network (ASN), an initiative launched by the Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Samford's home game against VMI on September 20 will be broadcast live on ESPN3. The Bulldogs' game at Chattanooga on September 27, and Samford's home game with Western Carolina on November 8, will air on ASN.

In addition to the league's partnership with ESPN3, the conference has reached an agreement for a diverse broadcast package with ASN.   As part of the agreement, a minimum of 18 Southern Conference events are tentatively scheduled to be shown on broadcast television affiliates throughout the southeast, including six football games during the upcoming season.  Sinclair's broadcast stations will carry the games as part of their primary program lineup on affiliates throughout the Conference's footprint.

"This is the most robust TV package Southern Conference football has enjoyed in quite some time," Commissioner John Iamarino said. "We'll have at least one game broadcast in 11 of the 12 weeks during the season, and several dates will feature two games. We're very pleased to continue our relationship with ESPN and launch a new one with the American Sports Network."

The overall TV package begins with the first Conference game of the season on September 6 when Furman travels to face Mercer.  That game will be Mercer's first contest as a Southern Conference program.

The broadcast schedule runs for ten consecutive weeks beginning September 20 when VMI visits Samford.  Furman will host Western Carolina, while Samford travels to Chattanooga in a double-header that will air on ASN September 27.

The final weekend of the regular season also features two games, including the Military Classic of the South, when The Citadel visits VMI.  The 2014 matchup will be the 70th meeting between the two schools.  That game will air on ESPN3 while Chattanooga visits Furman in a game that can be seen on the Sinclair affiliates.  The Mocs and Paladins were Southern Conference tri-champions with Samford in 2013.

Darren Goldwater returns to handle primary play-by-play duties for the league's broadcasts.  The 2014-15 year will mark Goldwater's fourth year on the Conference package after three years as director of broadcasting and play-by-play announcer for The Citadel.

Former NFL linebacker Corey Miller will handle the color commentary duties.  Miller, who currently serves as sports anchor and host with WACH-TV in Columbia, S.C., played collegiately at the University of South Carolina before spending nine years with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings.

ESPN3 is available in approximately 75 million homes to fans who receive their Internet connection from an affiliated service provider.  The network is also available at no cost to 21 million U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel.  ESPN3 programming is also available to subscribers through Xbox LIVE and through the free WatchESPN app available on smartphones and tablets.  The WatchESPN app is also available through Apple TV and Roku video players.

The American Sport Network consists of commercial TV stations owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group and reaches close to 40 percent of all TV households in the United States with 167 stations in 77 markets. A full list of ASN affiliates and a complete list of broadcasts will be finalized as the season draws nearer.
