BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team went through two practices Saturday at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs worked out in full pads in the morning and then again in shells in the afternoon.
The practices were the 15
th and 16
th workouts of fall camp. Samford Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator
Bill D'Ottavio said the team has had a productive camp so far.
"We've had a good camp so far," D'Ottavio said. "The kids are working well. We're doing a lot of good things and we're getting closer, but we still have a lot of work to do."
Samford is working toward its season opener at TCU. D'Ottavio said, heading into the final week of fall camp, the Bulldogs are ready to line up against another team.
"There's a point in camp when they kind of get sick of going against each other," D'Ottavio said. "You're one team, but you have to practice against each other. They get to the point where they get antsy for an opponent. We understand it, and every team in America goes through it, so you just keep working and keep focusing on things. We change up situations and that kind of keeps new things coming at them."
One position where the Bulldogs have some depth is at cornerback. Assistant Coach
Sam Shade talked about his group heading into the season.
"
James Bradberry has been a two-year starter for us," Shade said. "He's done a great job the past two years, and we are very excited about him. We're looking for him to continue what he's done.
Trey Wesley moved over to us from strong safety. That is going to be an interesting transition for him, but right now, he is doing a good job of making that transition from corner to safety."
The coaching staff has also named junior
Michael Eubank as the team's starting quarterback. Below is a statement from Head Coach
Pat Sullivan on the quarterback position.
"With our first game two weeks away, it is time to name a starting quarterback," Sullivan said. "We feel like we have two quality players we can win with in
Michael Eubank and
Carson Barnett. They have both had outstanding fall camps and our team believes in them. At this time we are going to name
Michael Eubank our starting quarterback. Each player has a role to play and we are glad to have them on our team."
Samford will take Sunday off from practice and will return to practice Monday. The Bulldogs will open the 2014 season on Saturday, Aug. 30, when they play at TCU. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, and the game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.
