PLEASANT, S.C. -- The Samford University women's tennis team closed out its stellar opening weekend of play at the 2014 College of Charleston Invitational with three championship titles Saturday as the Bulldogs claimed a pair of singles titles as well as a doubles championship held at Patriots Point.
In singles play, Samford's
Jessica Northcutt and
Savannah Wood starred in the A2 and B2 brackets, respectively.
Northcutt, the Bulldogs' extremely talented native of Duluth, Ga., swept Coastal Carolina's Sara Bonder in the championship match, 6-2, 6-3. With the victory, Northcutt closed out the College of Charleston Invitational with an unblemished 3-0 record in singles play.
Wood, Samford's highly-acclaimed true freshman from Woodstock, Ga., also turned in a perfect 3-0 record this weekend. In Saturday's championship contest, Wood breezed past College of Charleston's Grace Baker, 6-4, 6-1, to claim the B2 singles title.
The Bulldogs also earned a championship in the A1 doubles bracket as
Lauren Caballero and Northcutt teamed up to defeat College of Charleston's duo comprised of Kat Schofield and Samantha Maddox, 8-5. With their triumph, Samford's combination of Caballero and Northcutt finished the weekend with a brilliant 3-0 record.
Also victorious in doubles play Saturday was the Bulldogs' tandem of
Yasmeen Ebada and Wood. In the A2 bracket, Samford's aforementioned team knocked off Coastal Carolina's pairing of Romane Delay and Mila Majtan, 8-4, in the consolation title match.
Caballero also proved to be triumphant in the consolation championship match of her singles draw. In the B1 bracket, the Bulldogs' sophomore native of Brentwood, Tenn., cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mercer's Roxy Bartz. Caballero concluded the weekend with a 2-1 singles record.
Closing out Samford's play Saturday was Ebada in the third-place match of the A1 singles draw. Against College of Charleston's Schofield, the Bulldogs' senior native of Cairo, Egypt, dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 6-3 decision.
The field for the talent-laden, season-opening College of Charleston Invitational was comprised of five teams, including Samford, host school College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, UNC Wilmington and Southern Conference foe Mercer. The field was divided into four singles flights and two doubles flights.
The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Oct. 10-13, as the Bulldogs continue their 2014 fall season in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at the annual ITA/USTA Southern Regionals to be held at the University of Alabama Tennis Complex.
