SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford sophomore running back
Denzel Williams, junior safety
Josh Kimberlin and freshman running back
Krondis Larry were all honored by the Southern Conference when the league released its weekly football awards Monday morning.
Williams was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, while Kimberlin earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Larry was named the league's Freshman of the Week.
Williams, in his first season as a running back, turned in his first 100-yard performance in Samford's 63-21 win over VMI Saturday afternoon. Williams rushed 16 times for a career-high 178 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half.
Williams' first run of the game produced a 61-yard touchdown on Samford's second offensive play. He also scored on a four-yard run late in the first quarter. In addition to the 61-yard run, Williams also had a 42-yard run in the second quarter, which helped set up Samford's final touchdown of the first half.
Kimberlin helped anchor a strong defensive performance for the Bulldogs in Saturday's win. Kimberlin picked off two passes in the game and returned them for 33 yards.
The strong safety picked off his first pass with 10:43 to play in the opening quarter and raced 33 yards to the VMI 23-yard line. That set up
Michael Eubank's touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 advantage. Later in the quarter Kimberlin picked off his second pass at the VMI 45-yard line. He was credited with an additional pass break-up in the win.
Larry also turned in his first career 100-yard rushing performance Saturday afternoon. Larry had 10 rushes for 128 yards and a touchdown.
Larry scored on a 68-yard run early in the third quarter and averaged 12.8 yards per carry. His touchdown run is Samford's longest play from scrimmage so far this season. He also caught a pass in the win.
In addition to the honors from the SoCon office, Williams and Kimberlin were also honored as Players of the Week by SouthernPigskin.com. The website also named Head Coach
