SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford University volleyball team took on Wofford College on Friday, Oct. 2, and fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-18) to give the Terriers their first program win over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs (7-6, 2-1 SoCon) started off the initial set sluggishly and never recovered as the Terriers (8-10, 1-2 SoCon) took command of the match and forced Samford to play their brand of volleyball the rest of the night.
Samford battled the entire set as there were 15 ties and nine lead changes but never found a way to gain separation which allowed Wofford to capitalize and take set 25-22. The Bulldogs hit .062 in the set compared to the Terriers .121.
The momentum gained by the home team wasn't turned in the following set as Wofford jumped out in front early and never allowed Samford to tie or lead going into the intermission. The Terriers took the set 25-18.
Samford looked for a spark both offensively and defensively coming out of the break with changes at both the setter and libero positions. Junior
Mattie Newson assumed the libero duties and finished with a team-high 12 digs while freshman
Taylor Anderton (7) split time with junior
Erika Pifer (16) with both totaling a combined 23 assists.
Bella Santoro paced all attackers with 13 kills (.242) while Mollie Mayo dished out 33 assists in the three-set win for the Terriers.
The Bulldogs travel to the Atlantic coast to cap off the road weekend against The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. with the match set for 1 p.m. (CST).
