BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University men's and women's track and field team finished the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with a pair of second place finishes. The both teams tallied a total of 155 points over the two-day stretch.
"I told the team last night that we were very up and down, that's not the way you win championships," Samford head coach
Rod Tiffin said. "I'm extremely happy with the way we came back and did a heck of a job today."
Junior
Brandon Hazouri and senior
Marie Demedicis picked up a pair of individual championships in the 800 meters on the final day of the SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships. Hazouri claimed his award with a time of 1:54.73 while Demedicis turned in a time of 2:11.58.
Hazouri also claimed a second place finish in the men's mile earlier in the day with a time of 4:08.35. The Birmingham native's time in the mile was a new personal best and currently ranks second in Samford's all-time top-ten times.
Demedicis was followed up by fellow runners
Anna Laura Irvine and
Katelyn Brock who took second and fifth place respectively with times of 2:12.73 and 2:14.85.
Tiana Pisoni was the Bulldogs third individual award champion as she jumped 11.99m in the women's triple jump. Pisoni was also named the 2015 Women's Freshman of the Year.
Freshman
Sarah Sanford turned in a pair of school record setting performances for the Bulldogs on the final day. The Hoover, Ala. native secured a third place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.51 and then captured second place finish in the women's 400 meters with a time of 56.43.
Qiona Payton tied her personal best in the women's 60m hurdles with a sixth place time of 8.95.
Arsène Guillorel wowed the crowd in his first ever 5,000 meter race as he shattered the Samford school record with a time of 14:18.45.
Luke Weishaar turned in a personal best time in the event with a 14:57.80.
Freshman
Marquis Barnes built off of his solid start on day one in the men's heptathlon and closed out the competition with a third place finish and personal best score of 4,688 points. Barnes was followed up by
Josh Davies (4
th- 4,463),
Drew Patterson (5
th - 4,415),
Austin Billings (7
th – 4,330) and
Joseph Lee (9
th - 4,072). The scores for Lee, Billings and Patterson also served as personal best.
Barnes scored more points for Samford when he placed sixth overall in the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.64.
It was a heated race in the women's mile as
Ansley Bos and
Karisa Nelson both turned in top-five performances in the finals. Bos fought for a time of 4:58.91 while Nelson came in with a time of 5:00.22.
Sidney Jordan captured another third place finish with this time being in the men's weight throw competition. Jordan put up a mark of 17.35m while fellow Bulldog
Brian Hill tallied a 15.56m mark to earn a fifth place finish.
Carson Howe improved on his 400 meter time with a fourth place finish time of 49.72.
Sophomore
Morgan Johnson turned in a podium performance in the women's pole vault. The Plano, Texas native captured third place with a vault of 3.80m.
Javion Lee, Barns and Patterson all turned in solid performances in the men's triple jump as Lee took second while Barnes nabbed a fifth place finish and Patterson rounded out the group with a ninth place finish.
Kristin Brining (17.25m),
Aerial Horton (16.80m) and Katelyn Pool (16.03m) rounded out the field events competition going second, third and fourth in the women's weight throw.
Samford ended the SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships with a second place finish in the women's 4x400 meter race (3:51.55) and a third place finish in the men's 4x400 meter race (3:20.49).
