SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Samford's Carita Moolman was named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Month on Monday as the Bulldogs' junior native of Aranos, Namibia, compiled a brilliant 9-1 overall record in February against a slew of talent-laden opponents. The award was released by the SoCon office.
 
Samford's Moolman earned a near-perfect 9-1 overall record in February, including a 5-0 mark in doubles play as she teamed with Stephanie N'tcha to defeat Auburn's No. 7-ranked combination of Emily Flickinger and Pleun Burgmans, 6-2.
 
With their victory, Samford's Moolman and N'tcha became the No. 57-ranked doubles team in the nation as they started the season with a 7-1 overall record.
 
In singles play, Moolman registered a 4-1 record last month, with all four of her victories occurring in straight sets. Her lone loss of February came at Middle Tennessee, as she suffered a heartbreaking 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7) setback to the Blue Raiders' Giulia Squadrin.
 
Moolman started the month at the No. 6 position, but eventually made her way to the No. 4 spot in Samford's starting lineup throughout her success.
 
The other top players in the conference last month were Jessica Brumit (ETSU), Ansley Speaks (Furman) and Claire Mulyadi (Chattanooga).
 
Moolman and the Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Tuesday at 10 a.m. (CDT) as they travel to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, for a non-conference contest against UMass to be held at the College of Charleston Tennis Courts.
