Bailey Gray carded a second-round score of 1-over-par 73 on Monday to remain in second place out of 210 competitors at the 2015 Kiawah Island Classic being hosted by College of Charleston at the Osprey Point Golf Course.
Gray, the Bulldogs' senior native of Trussville, Alabama, will head into Tuesday's final round of competition with a 36-hole score of 2-under-par 142. On Monday, Gray opened the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a sizzling 3-under-par 69.
With 18 holes remaining in the 40-team tournament, Gray finds herself just a single stroke out of first place behind current leader Laura Fuenfstueck of College of Charleston. Fuenfstueck holds the best score of the competition with a two-round tally of 3-under-par 141 (70-71).
As a team, Samford bettered its score by three strokes Monday and remained in seventh place in the 40-squad competition.
The Bulldogs will enter Tuesday's third round of action just one stroke behind Southern Conference-rival Chattanooga (301-305=606) and nine strokes out of second place. The homestanding College of Charleston leads the competition with a 36-hole tally of 588 (300-288), while Troy currently sits in second place at 598 (298-300).
Individually for Samford, Gray paces the team with a two-day total of 142, while freshman
Kate Collom follows at 153 (76-77). The Bulldogs' sophomore
Sydney Needham turned in her best round of the tournament Monday with a 3-over-par 75 and owns a 36-hole mark of 154 (79-75).
Senior
Emily Stallings improved her daily score by four strokes in the second round as she posted a 77 on Monday. Heading into the final 18 holes of play, she holds a two-day total of 158 (81-77). Samford sophomore
Haley Harrington fired a second-round mark of 78 and boasts a 36-hole tally of 159 (81-78).
The Samford University women's golf team will resume play in the 2015 Kiawah Island Classic on Tuesday at 8 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs tee off in the final round of action being held at the Osprey Point Golf Course.
