BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University softball team embarks on a six game road stretch beginning tomorrow with a doubleheader against Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tennessee. The action on Wednesday, March 25, is set to start at 1 p.m. then follow up with game two that is projected to start at 3 p.m.
The Bulldogs (20-11, 2-1 SoCon) enter tomorrow's contest with a 1-3 record against teams from the Ohio Valley Conference this season; the lone win came on Feb. 14, at Samford Field in a 6-5 affair against Murray State. The previous losses have come from SIU-Edwardsville on Feb.28, at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic in Auburn, Alabama and a pair of loses at home on March 18, to Tennessee Tech University.
The Lady Governors (3-17, 2-5 OVC) despite their record have only played five games at home and hold a 1-4 record through that span. The win came on March 18, against Eastern Illinois University when AP won an 8-7 thriller.
The last time Samford faced Austin Peay was during the 2014 season on Feb. 19, in Birmingham as the Bulldogs defeated the Lady Govs to the tune of 11-1 and 6-5. SU holds a 28-12 all-time record against AP heading into tomorrow's matchup.
AP offensively will rely on team leader Christiana Gable who sports a .377 average at the plate with five doubles, six home runs and 23 RBIs. Laurel Burroughs (.344) and Niya Sparks (.300) will also provide assistance behind Gable in the lineup.
Redshirt junior
Mollie Hanson and rest of the Bulldogs pitching staff will be responsible for shutting down an aggressive Austin Peay offense. Hanson leads the Bulldogs with an 11 wins in the circle this season while sophomore
Grey Adams owns the lowest ERA on the staff at 3.38 in 37.1 innings pitched.
Offensively the Bulldogs will need quality production yet again from junior outfielder
Megan Dowdy. Dowdy leads the team and SoCon with a .442 average at the plate that comes along with 50 hits, 21 runs scored on seven doubles and two triples. The Fairhope, Alabama native is also credited with 17 multiple hit games on the season.
Sophomore
Abby Sweeney will need to continue her hot streak as well. Sweeney has worked her way into the starting defensive line up and up in the batting order with her play. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native is second on the team in batting average (.383) and leads the team with seven home runs and a .783 slugging percentage.
